What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Ultra-excellent.

Now - simply the best.

The booklet has a brilliant essay about chatedrals-music-'distribution' of bodies of Saints.(!!!)

Highly recommended.

Chestnut Mare is one of my favorite "Byrds" songs, though I hardly consider this assemblage anything close to the original band.

1996 recording of MTT/SF Orchestra Sacre du Printemps.
This is not an exciting rendition of the score being played out rather *straight* with no particular POV throughout. It has a few loud passages to keep me awake yet don't remember anything about the rest. This set just does not sound fresh to me.

I much prefer the Salonen/Philharmonia set.

Salonen preserves a good feeling of distant past and smell of the Earth. An organic intro followed by  rhythmic Dances of the Young Girls. It has good kicks and weight to the string instruments and as Stravinky's. Layering of instruments is also heard clear.  Mock Abuduction gives a sinister feel and urgency. Compared to Bernstein/LSO set, Salonen races through but it gives me a lasting impression via embedded various textures and variations in rhythmic shifts. Musicians are working together much tighter than MTT/SF to me. Sacrifice Intro is sensuous and mysterious. Tactile textures coming through greater on timpani and drums with startling impact yet somehow he doe snot let the tune becomes a noisy circus. The final movement is suspense filled hard boiled rendition building up to the finale. Spiky trebles and congestions ruin the experience a bit however.

Argerich and her ex Dutoit give assertive, powerful performances of these works, without going overboard with the energy or neglecting the works' subsurface feelings of longing and alternating doubt and resolve. Argerich, in her late 50s when she recorded this disc, sounds commanding and technically assured, less volatile and more balanced than in her early recordings for DG.

Cheers,

EJ
