What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

A (semi-legal, I suspect) compilation of incredibly obscure tracks by late 1960s American garage bands Not exactly high fidelity - all the tracks have been dubbed from vinyl or even AM radio - but marvellous all the same:

Was given this on CD. Just listened to it and it's rubbish, well executed in a technical sense but a real piece of unimaginative hackwork. So off to the Oxfam shop with it.

Cello Concertos by Josef Myslivecek and Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf featuring the Prague Chamber Orchestra on Supraphon vinyl.  Older recording (1986) purchased used and playing for the first time with a new cartridge installed.  Great way to start a Sunday morning.

Stephen Kovacevich's famous Beethoven concertos are with Colin Davis on Philips, but compared to his EMI remakes, they sound overly tame. The recordings are pretty good, and quite realistically present Kovacevich's distinctive piano sound. I think EMI meant to issue these on its classics for pleasure budget label from the start, and never bothered to hire a half-decent artist to design a cover.

Cheers,

EJ

The new(ish) Steven Wilson CD. First listen, and it's not bad at all.
