What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

First CD. Something quiet and relaxing before calling it a day

Ironically part of a batch bought in  HMV Meadowhell,  where i picked up most of the Stones albums that matter at £4.99 each.

Because I needed to refresh myself on the "Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth".

Donovan, Essence to Essence, on vinyl from 1973.

Having a first listen to "Say it to my face" Huey and the New Yorkers on vinyl that I got from HMV on Monday.

I can't really claim to be doing my bit to ward off the Administrators (unsuccessfully) as I was tempted to try it by the price.

Favourite track so far - The way it was before.

This was recommended to me recently and I have to admit I was ignorant of Fink. I love it.

On vinyl. Favourite track : Yesterday was hard on all of us.

Quincy Jones: Back on the Block
Very 90's but love the opening tune of Side B ( Birdland )

Posted on: 15 January 2013 by patk

Lineup:  Lee Alexander (bass), Jim Campilongo (guitar), Norah Jones (piano, vocals), Richard Julian (guitar, vocals), and Dan Rieser (drums)

An album of Americana and country cover songs.  Very enjoyable.

Sviatoslav Richter: Mozart Piano Concerto No.20 & Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.5

He mees to be more comfortable with Prokofiev program than Mozart. I still prefer Fisher or Haskil for No.20. Altho, Richter's stand offish Romanze creates a chilling poignant effect under the elegant surface.

On vinyl from 1981, my senior year of HS.

I like the songs, but the sound is a bit thick, dense, bottom heavy.

This makes a great *Lilly White* Lounge record. Their Hey Jude is a hoot.

It does have a bit of that "Pepperland" cartoon look on the cover.

joerand,

It's a sort of record your parents played when you are growing up.

Harmonies are Carpenter-esque.

I'll have to sample the MP3s online.  It has one of my favorite folk ballads, "Abraham, Martin and John".
