What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

I don't know this one Graham. Is it good? I love his guitar work with Canned Heat.

Hi Steve

I like this HM album. My copy is an old import copy on the Philips label. Picked up in the reduced bin from a tiny Virgin records shop in Sheffield, before Richard B went Global. Sheffield Graeme my well remember the shop at the bottom of the moor?  Its not a record i have played much but your prompt yesterday reminded me to give it a spin Its good and its worth picking up if you should see it anywhere.  Harvey does a cracking blues instrumental version of the Joe South's 'Games People Play' hence the pun of the albums title,

regards Graham

Listening to Leo Ornstein's amazing A La Chinoise, OP. 39 (1918)

The Russian born composer was living in Wisconsin at the time of the recording (2000) at the age of 102 or 105, probably the oldest composer alive.

"A La Chinoise seems to depict a train rushing along at full speed rather than romantic stroll along the Yangtse River. In fact, according to the composer, the piece was inspired by a visit to China Town in San Francisco."

It is track #20 on the URL above.

A fascinating disc.

Augustin Dumay (violin), Louis Lortie (piano)

Sonata for Violin and Piano in E flat major, Op. 18 by Richard Strauss

Stimmungsbilder for Piano, Op. 9: no 1, Auf stillen Waldespfad by Richard Strauss / Heifetz

Sonata for Violin and Piano in A major, M 8 by César Franck

Mélancholie, M 10 by César Franck

Prelude, Fugue and Variation for Organ in B minor, Op. 18 by César Franck / Dumay / Lortie

I have far too few recordings of the Strauss sonata.  An early work but one I find intriguing.  A difficult sonata to comprehend at times but with such shooting beams of beauty throughout it is hard to ignore.

Of course, I prefer my Franck sonata with piano and cello but this too is a nice effort and Dumay and Lortie seem to work very well together.

The packaging is very nice, but not a fan of paper in general.  I think I will be moving the CDs to PC so I can keep it in good condition.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Pat

Thanks Pat - I like the look of it but will see what work comes in this week, and will then make a decision as to whether to invest.
