What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Working my way through Brahms' chamber music. The string quintets are some of Brahms' more accessible but still characteristically dense chamber music works. The Nash Ensemble work the musical strands with complete unanimity of purpose, and a keen sense for melody and the long-breathed tension arches.

The next time you hear some rock star moaning about life on the road, think of this album and the remarkable tour that inspired it. In the summer of 1986 — which is actually winter down under — the Australian rockers and political activists of Midnight Oil packed amplifiers, sleeping bags and good intentions into a caravan of four-wheel-drive vehicles and embarked on a concert tour of remote Aboriginal settlements in the Northern Territory.

Johannes Schenck (c.1656 - c.1712)

Les Fantasisies bisarres de la Goutte

(Works for viola da gamba with and witout accompaniment)

Lorenz Duftschmid - viola da gamba

Sophie Watillon - viola da gamba

Rolf Lislevond - theorbe & guitar

Wolfgang Zerer - harpsichord & organ positive

~<>~

This is very nice to relax with on a warm summer evening : )

But what is an 'organ positive' ??

Does that mean Wolfgang Zener is on the organ donation register?

We should be told :+

Debs, a positive organ is one of those small, portable, organs. Looks a bit like an upright piano with a set of exhaust pipes

Cheers,

Very, very strange disc.

Full of strong/direct effects; 'out of harmonies' I am afraid.

First spin since 52 has arrived.

This CD more than simple 'audiophile' record; ultra-strong emotions and living factor; Hille's gamba is in the room.

Really.

Not sure if Sinead was the best choice on this album. Liz did a tremendous job on Mezzanine and I guess that set the bar quite high for a follow up. Still, a good effort.

Dmitri Shostakovich:  Emmanuelle Bertrand (cello), Pascal Amoyel (piano), BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Pascal Rophe

Concerto for Cello no 1 in E flat major, Op. 107

Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor, Op. 40

Moderato for Cello and Piano

My mood dictates some Russian music for Cello and Piano and Bertrand and Amoyel are my welcome guests this evening.

Sergei Prokofiev:  Polina Leschenko (Piano), Martha Argerich (Piano), Christian Poltera (Cello), Róby Lakatos (Violin)

Symphony no 1 in D major, Op. 25 "Classical"

Sonata for Piano no 7 in B flat major, Op. 83

Sonata for Cello and Piano in C major, Op. 119

Souvenir d'un lieu cher, Op. 42: no 3, Mélodie

Love for Three Oranges, Op. 33

Vocalise, Op. 34: no 14

More Russian music with my particular focus on the C major sonata for cello and piano.

Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Through The Devil Softly

Original vinyl. This is unlike the Chess output of Willie Dixon. A much more jazz orientated blues with Memphis Slim on piano and Al Ashby on sax. Beautifully clear recording.

What a great recording. Appart from the very fine and interesting music and the great voice of the lead vocal this recording impress by a, in our times rare, kind of natural recording withoout this so typical loudness war and emphasis of special instruments or vocals in order to highlight a special riff or something.

Men, one of the most natural sounding recordings in the last years.

Close the eye's and you have such a great feeling of "im close to them".

WOW
