What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

2011 master on CD. Sounding good. I never really liked it that much but "Pillow of Winds" is actually a pretty good song. "Echoes" is of course an out-an-out masterpiece.

Not listened to this for ages , on vinyl:-

Brahms sextets - is this gorgeous music or what? Echoes of late Schubert in Brahms' first sextet, especially the harrowing second movement. Love how Brahms works with the different 'voices' of the string instruments here.

The Nash Ensemble sound committed and, as ever, quite smooth and objective. Would like to hear what other groups can do with this music for comparison, but very happy if I would never find a better version.

Cheers,

EJ

Moody pieces for solo cello. Of the composers featured, Ligeti is the most well known and has the best music, by far. It still sounds relentlessly modern, bordering on and frequently crossing into atonality without ever becoming hostile territory like Schoenberg or indeed Ligeti himself in other works can be. The other works are of variable quality, some offering a Satie-like soundscape, others sounding like a perverted adaptation of a Beethoven movement, or simply like someone would expect modern classical music to sound: lots of ugly sounds and rises and dips through the octaves with a bang at the end. All of it sounds technically demanding, and Wispelwey does a great job on the good music and what he can for the other works. Recommended, for adventurous souls!

Cheers,

EJ

I am well thanks Graham. You? I note that you've been playing "LA Woman" - haven't heard that in years. Think I will give it a spin tomorrow - thanks for reminding me.

Late Junction on R3. Verity is even more gorgeous than normal tonight. Possibly slightly quieter than usual, giving our minds more space to move into (?)
