What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Haven't listened to this album much. Better with each listen.
Not everyones cup of tea I grant you but it's mine. G
On "deluxe" CD. Despite a very 1990s production, it's aged pretty well:
Whatever you think of Mikhail Pletnev, he's one of the best pianists I've heard live or on disc. This Grieg recital starts with the not-often heard piano sonata, and follows with some better known miniatures - one of his best discs. DG has received some criticism for its piano recordings over the years, but they gave Pogorelich and Pletnev some of the best piano recordings ever, close-up, full bodied from top to bottom and clear as a bell.
Cheers,
EJ
I'm a fan, EJ. There are many false messiahs when it comes to piano players. Most just don't 'do it' for me - i.e. Andnes from the near past, Lang Lang from the present (well, relatively), but Pletnev isn't one of them. An excellent player. Will search this out. Thank you.
I'm hoping to get around to this at the weekend. Any initial thoughts?
Been playing this for six months straight in a row - a good candidate for disc of the year!
EJ
That's some recommendation!
Vlad
Yes, I love it. Best thing Fray's done so far.
EJ
Had a listen to this today. The only other version I have is the Angela Hewitt recordings in her Hyperion Bach box set.
I like the way he lingers a little on each note compared to Ms Hewitt, and achieves a very warm and unhurried sound. By comparison, she is more precise in articulation but sounds a little more "prissy", IMHO. Very enjoyable, both, but would agree the Fray shades it.
Vlad
Hi Vlad
Unfortunately I have an allergy to very young, up-and-coming whippersnappers who claim to be able to play the piano.......... especially when they look like Leonardo Di Caprio
However, you and EJ have piqued my interest here - I will investigate further . W.W.

The only real benefit to being a classical ingénue, as I am, is that I've no real idea how a piece "should" sound. Any opinion I might offer is based on my subjective impression and not on any in-depth knowledge - unlike many a contributor here!
I really enjoyed the both Fray and the Hewitt recordings, with the former shading it overall for me. Even though both approaches are very different, I "believed" in the performances.
I have a couple of the Lang Lang discs (mainly Liszt and Chopin) - frankly, I didn't "believe" in his performance. More a question of playing the notes (supremely well, it must be said) but not playing the music, if that makes any sense. Now Maria Pires, that's quite a different matter!
I hope you have a listen to the Fray disc. I think it's well worth it. It's very possible that I picked up on it from EJ's recommendation!
Happy listening,
Vlad
