What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

First play of 44/16 rip from CD, since fitting NAC 52, I must say some holes have appeared in the wall of sound, a much better experience. Strange thing is logic says that the better the system, the better it is at showing up bad recordings.

"... and he makes you laugh, too. "This song is another song from one of those albums I made since I left the Rolling Stones," he declares dryly before "Mother." Though it may be a bit underrehearsed, Live in New York City is nevertheless classic Lennon, because it's all here — his humor, pain, anger and unshakable faith in the power of rock & roll to change the world."

"The overall effect is just weird, but in a good way--a quintessential lo-fi hodgepodge achieving a psychedelic wistfulness that has more to do with the feel than the sound."

A new purchase: Beethoven's late quartets by the Tokyo String Quartet. I've listened to Op.127 and the great 131, and both performances are warm, lyrical and with ever beautiful tone. The Tokyo avoid the strident accents and hairpin maneuvers of the Hagen or the Alban Berg, and like the Quartetto Italiano (even more so, I think) make the excitement come from below the surface.

Compared to the quartet's recordings for RCA in the early 90s (with different first violinist and cellist), these are definitely more sophisticated readings. The Tokyo have always been among the elegant quartets, but the newest readings add depth. Recording is superior, too. (Playing the CD layer).

Cheers,

EJ

I have been listening to this 7 (well 8) CD set on a regular basis for years.  It's wonderful.  But also I love it because it was recorded in the 60's in a medium sized jazz club in Chicago where I have lived most of the last 20 years.  It gives me a sense of nostalgia.  I can't imagine what it would be like to go to a regular jazz club and see Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock et. al. all on the same stage.  That could never ever happen today

First spin. I'm unfamiliar with the clarinet quintet but it's a beautiful work, which refreshingly uses the instrument's capability to produce long breathed, room filling sound, as opposed to the bubbling pyrotechnics we are normally subjected to (e.g. Schubert's octet).
