What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Received today, and I think this is a very engaging set of recordings.

Probably going to be my favourite, I like it that much already.

Cheers

Variations:  Emanuel Ax (Piano)

Variations and Fugue for Piano in E flat major, Op. 35 "Eroica" by Ludwig van Beethoven

Variations in F Minor (Sonata), Hob. XVII:6 by Franz Joseph Haydn

Symphonic Etudes for Piano, Op. 13 by Robert Schumann

One of the top living pianist around today in that ever diminishing group of 60+ year old musicians.  We all can and should learn from these guys who have been playing for 40 or 50 years.  Usually the best playing comes out after this amount of experience as they typically don't have anything further to prove.

Ax here lets the music speak mostly for itself.  Phrasing and articulation are second to none.  A nice recording of core piano music with the nice bonus of hearing Haydn living on the edge with an actual piece in F minor.

Pictures at an Exhibition - Preludes:  Katya Apekisheva (Piano)

Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky

Preludes, Op. 34 by Dmitri Shostakovich

Three Russians; three time periods.  The eldest composer may appear to be looking forward with the other composer probably looking back.  Yet neither composer's music could be called anachronistic.  Sensitively focused playing by a sharp Katya Apekisheva.
