What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Having had a new TT shelf installed- thanks to Richard  Dane, SteveJ,  Peter Swain  and others for the input/advice- this is the only record I could actually think of playing first.

A true work of art from Andy Tillison. Fabulous musicians play Andy's great tunes, set to a wonderful storyline, leading you through a working day.

Also, there's a 5 page feature on The Tangent in next weeks new edition of PROG magazine.

Hi Winky,

Seeing the current SW band at the Royal Festival Hall in March was one of the best gigs I've ever seen. Amazing musicians performing at the top of their game. Are you near enough to have seen the band in Montreal or Toronto back in April? I hope Steven writes another album for this group of players. It will be interesting to see what direction the music takes.

It's not just fans who are intrigued with the players in the band. Recently, Nick Beggs, posted this on his Facebook page ...

Playing in the Steven Wilson Band is a constant education. Sitting in the bar tonight just listening to Adam Holzman and Chad Wackerman talking about how Miles Davis and Frank Zappa used to work. Man... That stuff sets me on fire.

What I remember about my old vinyl copy of this, was the zipper would scratch the album cover of the previous record in the collection!  (Lou Reed Rock'n'Roll Animal was one such victim - lol)

Good choice Tony. I trust it sounds better on the new shelf?

Navigating among Capriccios, Intermezzos a Ballade and a Rhapsody. Brahms late piano works for an early morning. Anna Gourari playing is a pleasure.

Perfect prog for a nicely chilled room - hell these guys can play, and this is a very early album of theirs.

Aleg,

I just went last month to Marc-Andre Hamelin performance. Despite having a dozen recordings of his (including the one above) all the pieces played in the concert (Berg, Faure, Debussy, Ravel, Hamelin and Rachmaninov) were first time heard by me. I wish he had on the program some Liszt, Medtner or Scriabin.

Regards,

Haim

Denis,

Thats a great album, love it to bits.

English Electric I & II are slightly different with some magical songs on them, very much in the vein of story telling from Englands working history. The first re-breather, east coast racer etc are really well written and so well articulated by David Longdon (his voice has a very familiar lilt ;-) ). They have a great FaceBook page as well.

We will have you into early Genesis yet
