What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Johann Sebastian Bach:  Daniil (Daniel) Shafran (Cello)

Suite for Cello solo no 1 in G major, BWV 1007

Suite for Cello solo no 2 in D minor, BWV 1008

Suite for Cello solo no 4 in E flat major, BWV 1010

Suite for Cello solo no 3 in C major, BWV 1009

Suite for Cello solo no 5 in C minor, BWV 1011

Suite for Cello solo no 6 in D major, BWV 1012

Playing on his 1630 Antonio Amati cello, one that he won in 1937 by winning the All-Union Competition of Violinists and Cellists recorded between 1969 to 1974.

Simply wonderful.  Old school playing where colour, melancholy, grace, tenderness abound. I also love how his playing just naturally seems unhurried.

The cattle grids of Dartmoor, silence in churches at 4am and the impact of high energy hand dryers in toilets on young ears. These were part of David Sillitoe's enjoyable report on World Listening Day for R4's Today.

Laki Mera's latest and sounding rather good. Perhaps not so easy to get into as their last one :-

Great rendition of Brahms' fantastic piano quintet and op51/2 quartet. The quartet is a tough nut to crack, and the Takacs do what they can. I'm almost convinced it is great Brahms
