What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Johann Sebastian Bach:  Rosalyn Tureck (Piano)

Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1, BWV 846-869

Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 2, BWV 870-893

Rosalyn Tureck may require a great deal of adaption, patience, even forgiveness by some and is a hard sell for those who have only one idea regarding Bach.  It is so very different from almost everything else out there.  I like all different viewpoints but at the time of life I am in I can only say that I can't think of any interpretation that is more unhindered, free, redeeming and welcome.  When one is learning this music or playing in the confines of your own home late at night this is not unusual to play at these slow tempos.  I find her playing exposes this music in its purest, most unadulterated form and I am very thankful that Tureck had the courage to do this music in this way.  Why does everyone else feel they have to break the speed record to make a name for themselves?  If you want to learn this music inside out then this is the version I come to for some soul searching.  Slow, methodical, perfectly voiced and understandable - this music is simply pure joy for me in any form.  If Gould is the hyper agitated character at one extreme, Tureck is the complete opposite, showing us the extreme sedate monochrome vision completely void of showmanship and extravagance.

Although the music mesmerizes me in such a way that I can overlook any shortcomings in the sound quality of this 1953 mono recording.  I do secretly wish I could experience this exact interpretation in a modern wonderfully full and more accurate sounding recording of todays standards and best recording quality (on vinyl of course).

Robert Schumann:  Doric String Quartet

Alex Redington violin
Jonathan Stone violin
Simon Tandree viola
John Myerscough cello

Quartet for Strings in A minor, Op. 41 no 1

Quartet for Strings in F major, Op. 41 no 2

Quartet for Strings in A major, Op. 41 no 3

I seriously have to wonder if I have any recording better than what the Doric String Quartet give us in this recording of the Schumann Op. 41 String Quartets.  Astounding playing in every way captured near perfectly in this Chandos recording.
