What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Mogwai...Soundtrack from 'The Returned' Supernatural crime thriller set in a small Alpine village where a group of men, women and children do not yet know that they have been dead for several years.
Thanks Quad 33. Absolutely superb French TV drama, to which I am hooked, but I've been caught out with soundtracks in the past, only really 'working' with the visuals.
iTunes samples playing as I type.
John.
With special guest Larry Carlton.
Doc,
That looks really interesting. Is it a boot or an official release? (It's certainly not available on Amazon UK)

I guess it would come under the "boot" category - but there is no exchange of $ ("freely shared" on the back cover), and I am not sure how my brother does it, but the packaging and sound on this are first rate...it's out there because that's how I found the art work to display here.
Hell, SD can't complain - I already bought & own everything they've put out on official release.

Linger Lane Bobby Hutcherson streaming wav 1411kb/s Superb sonic quality and musicianship Stunning great on a hot summers afternoon, cool jazz fusion vibe
Superb - almost fusion in parts and a great dynamic recording. G
After seening WJ on the Rankin documentary 'Alive in the Face of Death'. Nice chap. G
Invisible again!....Dr Feelgood 'Stupidity'.
What a fabulous TV programme that was Graeme. Wilko quoting something apt from 'Hamlet' was a beautiful moment. The prog contained some great bits of music, and with the aid of the mind-bendingly clever Shazam app, I discovered a band called Vetiver, and now have their album 'Errant Charm' which I really like.
John.
Delightfully dark and disturbing atmospheric stuff from the land of KScope. Nice recording too.

My view of Rankin as an artist was shifted too. He invariably knew exactly which shot captured the whole subject and their feelings about their situation. It was as you say fabulous TV. G
Steve Winwood "Nine Lives"
Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the prod on this album. It's spinning now and I'd forgotten how good it is.
I only recently discovered and acquired another of Winwood's solo albums, 'Roll with It'. Another gem.
Best wishes from a very hot and sultry UK.
John.
Bellini's final opera, I Puritani, is frankly a bit of a mess with its heroine slipping into insanity no less then three times. But the music is glorious - Bellini's use of cantilenas developed to a point that rivaled Verdi in the latter's finest moments. The singer demands are outrageous, nevertheless a couple of good recordings exist. Callas has high marks but includes performance cuts and a mono recording; more recent contenders are Muti (with Caballe and Kraus) and this one, Sutherland's second. Everybody is really good here, but Sutherland herself doesn't sound fully committed and that is a big minus. The reason this is a must have, is Pavarotti: he throws around high Cs and Ds here, and even hits F.
Cheers,
EJ
Have been enjoying this a lot recently

Yep, he's actually a very good photographer I think. Having worked with him very (very!) briefly 9 or 10 years ago he is a pretty decent chap as well. As for Wilko - what an absolute diamond. I hope that when my end comes, I deal with it in as dignified a manner as he has done.

Memory is playing tricks. Having listened to the whole thing cover to cover, I fear I was overly harsh on Mrs Sutherland's contribution. Overall, a highly recommended recording.
