What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

There was a spike of Schumann concerto recordings when this album came out, and as it turns out I missed the best of the bunch... The concert introductions (overtures with piano and orchestra) are played well enough but don't leave much of an impression.

Cheers,

Rather excellent

One would think that a full hour of solo accordion music will be a fatiguing affair but this is not the case. On the contrary, it is a fascinating collection of 27 tracks divided into three groupings; Four Portraits, Accordion Misdemeanor and The Well-Tampered Accordion. The portraits were inspired by Michael Cunningham's novel "The Hours", the Misdemeanors were written for the audio book version of E. Annie Proulx "Accordion Crimes" and the Well-Tampered Accordion were composed specifically for this collection.

The enclosed youtube piece is not part of the album but clearly shows the musical skills of Guy Klucevsek.

Highly recommended.

Jackson Browne "The Naked Ride Home" (Spotify)

Different engineers make this Lugano recording a touch brighter than the past, but the program is always enjoyable.

I always find something I have never heard before played in a fresh live atmosphere.
As I try learning a chamber music, this is a good way for me to be exposed in small doses.

Rarely play Jarrett these days, not sure why.

A piano reduction of Le sacre.

Say, as I expected, did not disappoint with full of imagination and originality.

As Richter's Sofia live performance of Pictures at an Exhibition,  a piano can have the same impact and some times a greater impact than overly busy orchestra performance.

When you chose the right notes, you really don't need much of frills to get the point across with enough weight.

Some good songs before hopping onto the bike and out into the sauna

How do!

Soundtracks always seem to be well recorded, and this one is no exception. A complete contrast to my usual Saturday tipple, suffice to say it's very good....eh, back to my eh...tipple!

As you say, well recorded and a " very obvious" soundtrack. I quiet like that one.

Have you tried the first in this series - The Dark Knight?

Probably some of the most brutal music you will subject the system to - rather a challenge.

It really will warm up the amp quickly :-)

Hi,

Cheers for the heads up on this one. Just ordered, my system needs the cobwebs a blowing!

Dusty,

The first fifteen minutes or so are quiet extraordinary.

I hope you enjoy!

I am fully expecting this to show up in HiFi shows for those who dare..

Let us know how you get on.

Fantastic ambient / electronic music. If you like Kraftwerk, Zombi, Majeure,or Steve Moore you should enjoy this.
