What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Flawed yes, but still better than anything else in my view. The music is so difficult that perfect performances are an unreasonable expectation!

ATB from George

PS: My previous set was from Schnabel, and this was even less consistent!

George, I beg to differ. I wouldn't dream of putting down Annie Fischer (she was as hot as Argerich at her fiery best), but I find this specific set to be quite mediocre - musically as well as technically - with sparks of brilliance that show us what might have been. And Annie knew it, she tried to stop its issue for as long as she could.

Cheers,

EJ

It's controversial for sure, and I've never steered clear of controversy for convenience.

I have heard many superficially better cycles, but none that got closer to being terrifying and rough, AND honest. I can understand why she tried to stop the release! Toomany retakes edited, and some human failings ...

But it still has something special that no other has, IMO. She is interventionist as a performer, but her interventions are so insightful.

All the rest - if not the ever controversial Schnabel - sound rather tame after Fischer.

This is not tame music, and I'd rather a flawed great performance than a tame perfect one.

Listen to the Hammerklavier for example for an Earth-shattering performance!

ATB from George

PS: I'd rather had a pock market Michelangelo or Titian than a perfect Henry Moore or Kansinsky!

Dan, you lucky guy.  Welcome back from dead.  It's been a while since seeing your name.  Back from a time when we seemed to have more discussions about music and they were mostly alway interesting and sometimes even heated....

Doug

Hi Doug,

Yes, I've been away from forum activity for quite a while!

I was very fortunate to be there. There was some doubt to wether she'd turn up (but that's the custom for MA!).

I hope to begin contributing more to the Music Room once again!

I've been going through ONOBOX, a 6-CD box set of Yoko's solo work. some of which is really quite remarkable - 20 years ahead of its time.

I was prompted to dig it out because I'd been going through a box of old - some were 25 years old - magazines which I'd found in the cellar. Most of them contained pieces I'd written. Reading your writing from a quarter of a century ago is a lot weirder, and more disconcerting, than looking at a photo of yourself could ever be, let me tell you!

Anyway, in one mag from June 1992 there was an interview I'd done with Yoko, based around the release of this box set. So I thought I'd listen to it. Reading the interview, odd though it is to revisit one's old hackwork, and listening to the music, bought back happy memories of a long and very interesting Sunday afternoon/evening I spent talking to the great lady.

Steel Pulse - a great slice of late70's reggae.

Reminding  me of my time living in Handsworth, Birmingham, back then and listening to some great  pirate reggae stations aswell as plucking up courage to go into the local reggae stores to buy some great vinyl!

Is that vinyl box set any good G? (in terms of SQ, not presentation).
