What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Mine too. It almost feels like an extension of Los Angeles, another great X album.

I used to find these boring performances - but no doubt due to the upgrading of my rig over time - now finding them superb. The sound has a slight slightly digital edge, as so many other DG recordings of around this time. Listening to the Ninth at loud volume, I'm blown away by Abbado's shaping of the music and sense of balance. The opening of the second movement is magical.

Cheers,

EJ

Mercury Records 2 x CD : )

PlayingCD no.2, [starts off sounding like the Father Ted theme strangely enough]

This anthology doesn't have a dull track imo, every track highly enjoyable,

and the digital engineering an act of sheer perfection

How is it compared to the original pressing?

Could you look on the back to see who did the mastering?

Thanks!

Kuma,

Mastered by Krieg Wunderlich at Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. I do not have a copy of the original pressing to compare. I think it was nicely done.

Samson François: Chopin Piano Concerto No.1
'65 set with Louis Fremaux/Monte Carlo Opera Orchestra

It has been said that his early mono is the one to listen to but this later recording, he has not lost much of his lyrical spontaneous style. François gets the Chopin's inherent *blue* feeling right in my mind. His narrative and fluid pianism is a bit like Kempff. Maybe François is slightly more serious and forceful than Kempff. Both pianists to not let the mechanism of piano playing show.

Thank you Larry,

Interesting. I was so sure Rob LoVerde was going to do it as has done other light pop (Carole King/JT ).

I don't own any of Wunderlich's MOFI record.

It would be interesting to compare to the 2008 Acoustech release. ( Kevin Gray /Steve Hoffman )

But if this new MOFI is done right, then the upcoming MOFI 45 version would probably the best bet.

First spin and completely understandable why the original Borodin Quartet is so highly regarded.

great ensemble with very dynamic and balanced 'zusammenspiel'.
