What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Just the 19 'traditional' waltzes here, plus an homage by Mompou. Tharaud is at his finest in this music.

Automatic Man by Automatic Man.

Why? Because it's a superb album that was missed by so many people back in the 70s but has long been a firm favourite of mine.

I haven't listened to it for a while and I still know every word & still love it! Great musicianship & well produced. Prog Rock meets funk/fusion.

Listening to the ripped CD on the HDX as I can't find my original  LP at the moment :-(

From what I read, during his NYP years, the performances of American work rose from about 4% to 15%. This would never happen today as programming is largely decided by marketing and research department for an orchestra to survive. Many of them are in a financial trouble in the US.

Barber's Adagio for Strings is well known but I knew very little about his other works such as this violin concerto. I find it lovely. Mixture of modern work and old Brahms-esque romanticism.

Schuman, OTOH, is a bit difficult to digest testing my patience. There are some interesting thing happening such as opening theme of In Praise of Shahn, but somehow it does not sustain my interest all the way through.

This is Sony's late 90s SBM remaster which I find them poor.
