What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Haim, I don't see it on the MA website?  Do you think the LP will be added or will they all be snapped up through e-mail requests?

EJ,

That was my first Tharaud, still my favorite along his Bach Italian Concertos. Way at the bottom of the list rests his Le Boeuf Sur Le Toit.

Haim

Haim, it seems you have a beef with Le Boeuf?

Don't know, Doug. Why not write to Todd Garfinkle and ask him?

By the way, the picture on the CD is upside down, reflections on top.

I wouldn't even rate it  'vache miniscule'.

Gents,

Pretty much agree with Haim's assessment, he has the cold romantic heart for Bach and Chopin (his preludes are also excellent, the 'journal intime' collection a bit over-inflected) but

I also find it hard to love his crossover work - the swing and swagger sound affected and risk-free.

Cheers,

On vinyl from the box set:-

Why? because it was released in the UK 47 years ago yesterday.

I have spent the past hour and a half listening to this, from the 2012 vinyl box set:

Along with the first album, it's for me the best sounding of the 2012 vinyl.

One thing struck me as I listened - in 1965/66 they released two consecutive singles: Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out and Paperback Writer/Rain. Four incredible songs that weren't even on any of their albums. Rain was effectively a "B"-side FFS!

Most bands don't write four songs of that quality in their whole careers, let alone release them as consecutive AA singles in mid-career.

What an incredible band.

Reminds me of meeting my now wife in 1986.  She played it often and so I guess it stuck with me.

Hadn't played it for years until about a month ago and since then it's had a weekly airing.

Best
