What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Musica Callada

"Federico Mompou's  (1893-1987) late masterwork influenced by musical poetry, has a connection to a minimalist style that comes from the legacy of Erik Satie. Musica Callada is the very model of musical reverence, unfolding almost like a ritual."

Johann Sebastian Bach:  Sergey Khachatryan (Violin)

Sonata for Violin solo no 1 in G minor, BWV 1001

Partita for Violin solo no 1 in B minor, BWV 1002

Sonata for Violin solo no 2 in A minor, BWV 1003

Partita for Violin solo no 2 in D minor, BWV 1004

Sonata for Violin solo no 3 in C major, BWV 1005

Partita for Violin solo no 3 in E major, BWV 1006

Did it matter what genre was before him?  Whether it be choral, keyboard, strings - Bach seemed motivated by the challenge to write music that simply could not nor ever be surpassed.  The six Sonatas & Partitas like his Six Cello Suites were his only go at the solo violin and cello repertoire, respectively.  No messing around.  It was a simple plan.  Write a set of pieces for a specific instrument, do it well, then move on.

An enjoyable and finely recorded set here by Sergey Khachatryan - as dark and reverent as the cover.
