What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

In Malibu California

There's a surfer do you remember

He used to ride the big kahuna

With Robin and Finesse

They used to call him super hooter

He used to rock there to wooly bully

He's the one you can see him on the beach

They call him old man

Checking out the girls and their cars

But he's still got the GTO

And he still loves to drive that road

He's still got a GTO mighty good

It's kind of gold

GTO

Amazed at the previously unheard delicate percussion on 'Hot Stuff' revealed by the SN2. My favourite of the post BB era. G

IMHO Sarah's best album - repro is very good on CD, with excellent dynamics.

Vocal is forward in the mix.

Sergei Rachmaninov: Eldar Nebolsin (Piano)

Prélude in C sharp minor, Op. 3: no 2

Preludes, Op. 23

Preludes, Op. 32

I only have a handful of CD's from Naxos.  I don't know why but somehow in my collecting I picked this one up and it is one the gems among my Preludes library now.  Eldar Nebolsin was born in Tashkent and is a pianist I need to spend more time with.

My criteria for elevating anything is that the player must be musical (and the recorded sound goes along here as it must sound as real to life as possible within the confines of recorded processes).  Second, I care less as to "what" they are trying to say as to "how" they are saying it.  In a conversation, the "what" is the opinion and everyone is entitled to their opinion and so it goes.  The "how" relates to how clear they convey the message.  Is it convincing?  Do they even have any interesting ideas or just playing notes?

To my ears, Nebolsin hits a home run on all accounts.  The musicality is here in spades and the message is also quite clear.  Delivered on a silver platter, in fact.  It is very direct and emphatic at times but far from poking you in the eye and beating you into submission.  This is persuasion at its best.  He makes suggestions and you (well, me anyway) feel totally compelled to follow as it is just that genuine.

If you collect piano music like I do and in this case, Rachmaninov Preludes specifically, you need to have this one too.  A real winner in my opinion.
