What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 01 January 2013

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

It's that old major/minor ping-pong trick again, and it works on me every time.

Always find Isolde's play exceptionally stimulating, something to do with the unpredictability between the dynamic and the technical, and warts n all realism of an occasional dud string note on the old harpsic, really marvellous imho, nothing over-sanitized here.

Should enjoy my I.A. box sets more often, it's what they were made for : )

Something of a rarity, but actually a rerelease of - as far as I know - the first (ca 1952) comprehensive recording of Bachs keyboard works played on harpsichord. I used to own Vol. I containing the WTC, The partitas and the AoF. When I changed from LP to CD, I transcribed the WTC and the AoF to CD but parted with the partitas, which I - along with the French suites - found a tad too stiff and inflexible. I was also unhappy that she chose to omit all the repeats.

Some of the recordings can be purchased from the former Baroque Record club:

Hello premont,

Your first post? Welcome to the forum! : )

Thank you for your interesting comments, i also have the Vol.1 box-set which seems to be better imho, musically and better recordings. I’m only just exploring my Vol.2 box, found the Goldberg variations slightly disappointing [a bit dull?] but I generally find Ahlgrimm’s form to be more than often entertaining and fun.

Thanks also for the web site link, will give it some time for a good perusal.

No I am not really new to the Naim forum, being the former pe-zulu, but maybe you do not remember me. I had forgotten the password to the zulu account and decided to reregister using a more convenient username. I can see, that my zulu account is still active, and it probably ought to become inactivated, but nowhere can I find a link to the administrator, and the PM option seems to have disappeared.

Mussorgy's Boris Godunov (the 1872 version with added bits from 1868), given a dramatic reading by Rostropovich and his Washington forces. The international cast is headed by Ruggero Raimondi in one of his best roles.

Cheers,
