What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Bruce Hornsby "Greatest Radio Hits"

Though it at times sounds "same old thing, same old thing", there are some great songs here, great instrumentation and wonderful playing.  Bit pop, bit country, bit jazz.  A musical stew to be enjoyed.

Dave Matthews Band "Away From The World"

Newest release from DMB, this is the the second album since the loss of LeRoi Moore.  The DMB sound has evolved some as a result.  Whether it is an improvement will be up to individual taste.  It is a bigger sound as along with a sax replacement, the "regular" line-up now appears to include trumpet, keyboards and the guitar worker of long time DM duo partner Tim Reynolds.  It is a bigger brassy sound, but I think I preferred the more stripped down "previous" band.  Still quality music.  Just different. LeRoi is missed.

On vinyl from 1979.  I love this album!  It's so great to hear it again.  Two of my favorite NY songs on the same LP; Thrashers (acoustic) and Powderfinger (electric).

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

Spoon - Girls Can Tell

One of the local stations plays both bands a bit, and reminded me haven't listened to both in some time.

Not every single thing RLJ has done is brilliant. But much of it is. Including this.

Cool!  I did not know that.  The band broke up a while ago.  Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss's current project is Wild Flag.  I think the album is pretty good.  Corin Tucker has her own band as well.

Albums of "covers" tunes can often be a no-no for me, the "new" arrangements only reminding me how much better the originals were.  But along the lines of the Kate Walsh success, the Marc Cohn is one of the best I have owned.

Hi Jeff,

Yeah, in general I agree with you.  I have softened my stance a little over the years though and get interested in how the new artist interprets a song I am really familiar with.

Thanks for the Marc Cohn suggestion.  Offhand I am not familiar with his work.

Best regards,

Pat

On CD and still in the study but no longer "working". Is this available on vinyl? The "faux vinyl" surface noise would be interesting

Chris,

This is available on double vinyl, sounds very good too
