What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

This album is kind of really cool... His early stuff, not so much in my humble opinion!

Haim,

that's a CD on my wishlist ~ having a very enjoyable 5 minutes worth of impromptu on the last track of the 2 cd set below, mindyou, everything else sounds stunning too with the 1993 live recording : )

Mischa Maisky's first recording is just as good as his later performances, a bit less exuberant but already romantic and full of pathos. Easier to get into than his later (2000) recording for DG, which is pure genius IMO but where you can't deny his creativity takes over the music in places. And as ever, his cello sounds gorgeous (the recording also captures a fair amount of grunts, breathing, bowing and other sounds.

And a first spin, by the new disc from another great cellist: Queyras' recording of the Elgar cello concerto.

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks (vinyl)

I have to admit to never really having "got" this album, but every so often I dig it out and try again. A chill evening, a log fire and a glass of single malt are definitely adding to the atmosphere

Great album, very well produced and great songs. If only their previous stuff were half as good.

Nice cover...
