What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Boz Scaggs "Memphis"
Can you give me a 1-10 grade on this - I almost bought it when it came out, but I wanted to hear more of it, which due to hectic work I have not had a chance.

Franz Liszt: Claire-Marie Le Guay (Piano)
12 Études d'exécution transcendante:
I. Preludio (Presto) in C major
II. Molto vivace in A minor
III. Paysage (Poco adagio) in F major
IV. Mazeppa (Allegro) in D minor
V. Feux follets (Allegretto) in B-flat major
VI. Vision (Lento) in G minor
VII. Eroica (Allegro) in E-flat major
VIII. Wilde Jagd (Presto furioso) in C minor
IX. Ricordanza (Andantino) in A-flat major
X. Allegro agitato molto in F minor
XI. Harmonies du soir (Andantino) in D-flat major
XII. Chasse neige (Andante con moto) in B-flat minor
Dreaming of the wonderful snow storms ahead...
Possibly a low point in terms of sound quality for Decca, this sounds distant and reverberant, with loudness applied to the lower octaves. The whole sounds slightly congested and shut-in. The performance of the Handel variations is worth it, though.
Cheers,
EJ

Well, I'd give it a nine! Boz at his very best.
I forgot what great music this was.

One of my favourite albums, 'live' or studio. 'It Must Be Love' at the end of Frankie & Johnny brings out the old softie in me. Then again, Michelle Pfeiffer...
Never thought I would see this here. Laura used to work for me. Her sister still does.
An official Virgin cd of a Live Radio Broadcast celebrating the release of Come on Home which is rarer than hens teeth. Great Show.
Cheers,

Just saw this, pleased TonyM responded more timely. I am no expert on Boz, but this album is all the things I like when I hear him. Quality playing, smooth vocals and good production. I enjoy it very much.

How should one listen to music? For myself it is rarely like a fast food affair. Similar to an obligation or going through the motions that one does to satisfy a need but rarely does this kind of effort satisfy for long after the fact. Oddly, I find that complicating things really leads to simplification and understanding eventually. Rather than say my meal was just superb it is more interesting for me to analyze the details. It might be because of an interesting taste, aroma, look, feel or texture. The sum of the parts is always greater than the whole.
It feels odd to say but sometimes I don't like a whole piece or movement. It may come down to the fact that I'd give my life for the few kernels of glory found within a bar, or phrase, or transition etc. When I think of a piece it is these rare motifs that drive the meaning overall for me. In some cases, I wait impatiently for 25 minutes just to hear that one 5 seconds or 20 seconds part that contained the key to the entire eternal bliss of the moment.
I've now run out of time so my complete review will have to remain in my head. I do have enough time to do a complete twitter review though...

Thanks Steve, will do.
I have already earmarked their gig with Maschine (worth checking out) on Sun 24 Nov.

Whilst watching the Tour of Alberta (with the inane commentary blissfully silenced). Sagan for the stage win!
I certainly prefer her version of 'Dancing In The Dark' to the Boss's.
New release by The Civil Wars
First listen.
