What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Been shopping on Linn website always bad news. Hi Def download. Delightful voice on this second album from Maeve. A nice mix of lighter folk style and more upbeat pop but never overbearing. A very easy listen.

Superb Guitar Trio, highly individual, atmospheric, laid back jazz. Another Hi Def download

Gregorys' first album on Blue Note. Very much up to his usual standard IMO his best album yet. Hi Def download, impressive quality.

Arrived today. Not played the vinyl however, after two plays of the free CD I am very impressed. Maybe not as electronic as some of her early releases. This has a more ambient feel, along with some beautiful vocals from Alison.

Mascagni's claim to fame is his opera 'Cavalleria Rusticana', often performed as a double bill with Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, but he wrote fourteen other operas as well as some other works. L'Amico Fritz is probably the least obscure of these other operas. Totally unfair: the opera is great fun, has good music and a charming but shallow story.

There is a beautiful recording by a very young Pavarotti and Freni. This more recent (live) recording isn't on that level overall, but I actually prefer Veronesi's stylish conducting, and in terms of beauty of sound, Angela Gheorghiu is unbeatable. Sound quality is very good, especially for a live recording.

Cheers,

Hi Graham,

Just ordered the album(£15.00 for LP+CD=bargain!) based on your commnents. I really love her voice but have not been so keen on the over disco-ed production of some previous releases.

Looking forward to listening to the vinyl. Many thanks.
