What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Mine is a first press in 'Fatboy' CD case which is worth trying to get over the later remaster imho.

Hope you enjoy it.  Great 'Carpet Crawlers'.....G

Can't match that, Graeme. Mine is a 1994 Virgin edition like quite a few of my other Genesis CDs but the quality of those is ok so I'm hopeful of this one. MDS

Yes it does - if only he would stop 'squeaking'! I find it so irritating.

They are fine in the main but check fleabay for the early Charisma versions which you can pick up for sweetie money if you are lucky. SEBTP is particularly good. G

Ludwig van Beethoven:  Martin Roscoe (Piano)

Sonata for Piano no 24 in F sharp major, Op. 78

Sonata for Piano no 30 in E major, Op. 109

Sonata for Piano no 30 in E major, Op. 109

Sonata for Piano no 32 in C minor, Op. 111

Finally starting the Martin Roscoe Beethoven recordings.  The booklet lists all 9 volumes of the Sonatas with CD number references but so far I only see Volumes 1 to 4 available.  I like what Roscoe offers here - simply a solid, focused and adroitly judged rendition that doesn't stray too far to the left or right of centre.   Roscoe is a substantive player in this repertoire which I like very much with my only slightly negative comment is pointed to the variable recorded sound.  This may be the only point of separation between these recordings and any other great recording of the sonatas but bear in mind I am very picky.  The actual degree of latitude is one of hair widths probably in reality.

Wonderfully presented by the SN2. G

Purists seem to decry this one a bit, but I like it.  Not their pinnacle, but CSNY on an off day are still better than most of their ilk. G

Well OK maybe Bill Evans but of all the post-Evans pianists Keith Jarrett has raised the standard of the acoustic piano trio to a fantastic level (irritating background aural effects or not)

After listening to Haken 'The Mountain', which is very good I thought I'd listen to some original prog from the '70s on original vinyl. There are a few similarities in the structure of the music but none of the thrash metal type riffs that are on the modern album.

Original 1st press vinyl. Nothing like future albums.
