What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

CD, ripped from hi-res WAV files while I wait for my deluxe box set to arrive...

They used this on radio 4's adaptation of 'Saturday Night, Sunday Morning' on Saturday which was quite novel. G

Bernard Herrmann's brilliant score for Hitch's equally masterful "Vertigo":

Drone Pilots, the afternoon play on R4. From the BBC site: "Two night shift operators fly a drone from a trailer in the American desert. He's a much-decorated fighter pilot from rural Georgia, who has come out of retirement to make ends meet. She is a superstar gamer from New Jersey, who's just been recruited to the job of sensor."

Enjoying it. Enjoying the exploration of the generation gap.

This is the best 'new' Blues LP I've discovered in a long time. Recorded in '81 it was only released in France. Alligator have issued it on vinyl and the SQ of the music is superb but I'm going to have to return it as there is a pressing defect on side 2. Damn.

Buddy Guy on 6 and 12 string guitar and Junior Wells on harmonica. That's it. Blues unplugged at it's raw best.

If you like this, then have a try for this - to me a brilliant version of Elonor Rigby..

This is turning out to be one of this year's other surprises. One of the records hosted by Linn Records as a studio master (24/96), so an ideal opportunity to compare this very well recorded performance on CD, CD-rip and hi-res download (the latter sharing a USB thumb drive). Still need to get around to a comparison, but at first, both CD and 24bit files sound extremely good.

Cheers,

Did a comparison of the Vocalise, with its tender tune, across the three formats. Almost no audio quality difference between the CD and the CD-rip (there is some, probably due to the different front end, and similar but not identical DACs). The 24-bit file sounds softer grained, more detailed and more spatial, which seems all good but these factors also slightly affect the balance between the instruments, drawing more attention to the violinist. A straight comparison is more difficult than I thought, but in the end, I'd be happy with either.

Cheers,

EJ
