What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Amongst several episodes of Rumpole on youtube, has been interleaved some of the best music listening for weeks.

Bach of course ... BWV 522, the "Saint Anne" Prelude and Fugue, and the Triple Keyboard Concerto in C, BWV 1064. Artists were Helmut Walcha and Edwin Fischer, mainly!

Oh, and the Six Part Ricercare from the Musical Offering, played by Scheideger on the Harpsichord, and then by the Edwin Fischer Chamber Orchestra strings [i.e the best of the Berlin Philharmonic] as recorded in 1980 and 1930 respectively. The old and the new standing side by side with resplendent honesty and without any sense that the new is better or worse than the old when both are great!

Bach's is such strong music that the only thing that can kill it is the narcissism of the performer who places himself in front of the music itsel ....

Starting my *Petroushka* journey in anticipation for Grigiev/Marrinsky live set in a few weeks.

I love Stravinsky conducting his own scores! So fresh and playful.

On 180gm vinyl, great sound, extremely quiet surface and Space Oddity never sounded so good.

If you like this, then have a try for this - to me a brilliant version of Elonor Rigby..

Thanks for the recommendation Bert. I have heard the Stanley Jordan album and it is also a nice album.

The more I listen to this the better it gets.Still don't think it will rank up there with the first six albums but still a lot better than Never Say Die or Technical Ecstasy

All the best G

G - The best album is the first one,  "The Return of the Durutti Column" (1979) - still available on vinyl. There are a couple of reissues but best go for the original Factory (FACT 14) issue. First pressing, in the sandpaper sleeve, goes for several hundred quid but second and third pressings, in the Raoul Dufy sleeve, can be picked up for reasonable prices.

Otherwise, I'd go for (in order) the following (most can be found on vinyl):

Vini Reilly (1989)

The Guitar & Other Machines (1987)

LC (1981)

Without Mercy (1984)

Obey The Time (1990)

The Best of The Durutti Column (2004) - CD only

The thing with DC is to avoid stuff with too much of Vini singing (latterday albums have too much singing on them). He is a brilliantly distinctive guitarist but a hopeless singer!
