What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

One of the better Mazurkas are played by Michelangelli.

You can do a lot worse than Pollini's Etudes. Sure beats so many vapid Chopin covers.

He's still one of my *piano heros*.

This '88 recording of Richter's Etudes is my favourite by far. Intense temperamental Chopin.

Definitely Brian Eno and different.  Grows on you.  Excellent recording on 200 gm vinyl.

One you definitely want to listen to with the lights turned down and a glass of scotch in hand.

Classic King Crimson, re-issue on 180 gm vinyl.  Never realised how "jazzy" it can be considered.

Ludwig van Beethoven:  Igor Levit (Piano)

Sonata for Piano no 28 in A major, Op. 101

Sonata for Piano no 29 in B flat major, Op. 106 "Hammerklavier"

Sonata for Piano no 30 in E major, Op. 109

Sonata for Piano no 31 in A flat major, Op. 110

Sonata for Piano no 32 in C minor, Op. 111

The music I mostly listen to is all about the details, not that this composer should sound like this or that.  Levit is a thinker and his Beethoven is not solely about power and strength.  It is more about subtlety, touch, tone, the relationship from one note to the next and the overall architecture (micro and macro phrasing).  I really like this approach and can relate to any musician who puts passion for this music above all else.
