What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

I was walking to work this morning and the lyrics of this song came to mind......

I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song.

I'm twenty-two now but I won't be for long
Time hurries on.
And the leaves that are green turn to brown,
And they wither with the wind,
And they crumble in your hand.

From this album....

On Vinyl.

Jumping almost 200 years into the future, to 1739, with Rameau's Dardanus. The story is loosely based on the Greek myth - across five acts, Dardanus (the demi-god whose great-grandson would found Troy) manages to win the girl by defeating a sea monster ravaging King Teucer's land.

The music is typical Rameau: festive and/or stormy where possible, densely scored, and vocal lines that are still half declamatory, half sung. The performance is just about perfect, with John Mark Ainsley on superb form.

Cheers,

EJ

Kuma, try this :

Fantastic Scherzi. These above discs blow away the long held view that Richter couldn't play Chopin.

WW,

I already have it on vinyl!

Well, if you want a flowery girly gilded Chopin, you won't hear that from Richter, that's for sure.

I've noticed that he picks on his favourite rather than playing the entire set claiming other pieces can be done better by others.

A month later, he played Scherzo No.2 at Salzburg Festival.

I picked up this ORFEO CD not because of his Chopin but I was curious to hear his Suit Bergamasque. This one is slightly different approach from the Munich recording above. He's often accused of being analytical and cold but,  here, Richter sounds very human and pensive and down to earth, even. The finale build is simpler than most but the whole presentation I find is just as riveting.

Pogorelich's Scherzo is said to be worthy but I still haven't heard it yet.
