What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

My wife likes him Bert. Agree with you, pure elevator music. I try to lose the CDs but they keep turning up in the kitchen.  I point blank refuse to let her play them in the music room.

Is it a Blue Liberty pressing then Graham? By coincidence I have been playing these two live Canned Heat LPs today. Henry Vestine's guitar work is so good on both.

Original Blue Liberty vinyl.

Original DJM vinyl.

Johann Sebastian Bach:  András Schiff (Piano)

Das Wohltemperierte Klavier: Book 1 & 2, BWV 846 to 893

My morning source of strength for this day.  I am a detail oriented person by nature so I am entirely attracted to Schiff and his intellect and ideas and approach to music.  His Bach and Beethoven alone give me an unending source of pleasure.   Every detail is scrutinized and well thought out.  While I'm very glad Schiff is adamant about not using the pedal (since I have already multiple other artists whom I enjoy and who do) I am equally glad about Schiff's attitude toward unashamedly using the "white elephant" for Bach.  Some people choose to make this an issue from a dogmatic point of view as even their sole issue and I find this extremism devoid of anything remotely conducive to enjoying or understanding the meaning of Bach's gift of music to the world to each of us personally.  Whatever works for you I say but to assume Bach holds this extremely narrow view is absurd.  If you understand the music you get close to understanding the man himself and his music actually points you in the opposite direction and opposed to dogma and extreme fundamentalism.

For those interested, here is a nice discussion about Bach's music.  I personally wish someone like Schiff or any great artist would give detailed discussions about the music (each Prelude and Fugue) and its structure and the meaning of how it was written, the keys etc. (like this could ever be solved but it is interesting to me to think about it at least).

Hi Steve.

Yes its a Blue Liberty pressing. The cover posted is not quite the same as my copy, which the has the blue Liberty logo in the left hand corner & a stereo LBS 83059E sticker in the right hand corner.The matrix no looks like lbl 83059 A 1// 420 113.

Hope you are well Graham.

Yes. Thanks Graham. What you have is a 1st press of an excellent album. I hope it's in good shape. I have the Mono 1st press.

Another Canned Heat LP to keep an eye out for is this;

It was recorded before they were signed to Liberty but not released until later by Pye. It shouldn't be too expensive.

Addition of the HCDR to SN2 very noticeable now. 'Helpless' instrumentation very clear and present. The piano on the LHS more percussive and present for example. G

Hi Graeme, will let you know what I prefer once I compare it to the old cd but not sure if the Original series cd had the remaster they did a few years ago or the original mastering.

On first listen I like it but meant to say that I personally didn't find the original all that bad maybe a little low on volume.
