What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Reminds me to pull out a couple of Passport discs later as I haven't played them in ages.

My 1966 copy of this album is well 'batted' but as Dr Blues said on another forum " This ain't HIFI this is just good emotional foot stompin' music"

Jerry Garcia Band fest.  From the Lunt-Fontanne run in October 1987.

31 October is a 4 CD set.

Finished that, and onto:

A CD which I haven't listened to in years. I thought it sounded stale when it first came out, but those were Arcam days - it was high time for a reassessment. And it sounds rather more involving than I remembered. For a live recording, sound is exceptionally good but, also typically, a bit dark. The performance is a touch careful and occasionally more than a bit. But the cast, chorus, orchestra and director know their business and in the early 2000s, I doubt a better cast could have been assembled. Enjoyable if not essential.

Cheers,

EJ

Patty Griffin - American Kid.   CD.

Very good.  Recommended.

My first listen to the new Mazzy Star / Seasons of Your Day double vinyl.

The music is ...okay, fairly typical of her 90s material, and it may grow but for the disapointing concerns over the SQ quality of the vinyl.

Is this a louded digital master?

We should be told

Paul Motian: I have a room above her

Three good musicians (especially Bill Frisell) speaking in different languages. In other words; a lack of synergy turns listening to the CD a chore.
