Graeme apologies that it took me so long to do a shootout between this and the original French produced cd.
I seem to recall that the America albums were secretly remastered for cd a few years back in the US (could be wrong) but this remaster never made it to Europe so any European pressed cd should still be an original mastering.
Re the sq on this it appears that SH has accentuated the mid range and lost some of the finer treble and bass detail. This is a mastering technique he has used now for a number of years.
The disc does sound better than the old one in that sense because you have better back to front depth, better instrument and vocal placement (in the mid range) but he has ever so slightly squashed the dynamics of the original to achieve this and I do mean ever so slightly.
Personally I think this particular disc suits this style of mastering.
You can hear this squashing in the synth in Sandman just loses that little bit of air in the treble and in I Need You it "sounds like" one of the band stomps his foot two or three times during the opening minute or so of the song which you can hear clearly on the original but have to strain to hear on the AF disc.
However the mid range improvement means you now know that in the start of Children you are listening to 3 acoustic guitars as you can hear them clearly.
Since he has slightly squashed the dynamics he has made the newer disc louder, some would call that compression but it again isn't that bad as I doubt if he has clipped the disc in anyway.
Just to be sure of what I was hearing I checked both discs EAC readings and also their DR ratings and it confirmed what I was hearing but having said that the original disc was too quiet and needed a remaster.
