What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Hi Ewemon, It's a performance on a pretty high level. It's a good balance between violin and piano. Sometimes I would like to feel a bit more emotion as it's a bit too technical/clinical for me. But still - I like it enough, so I have heard it now already a couple of times.

Hi Ewemon,

Just saw a 5 star review in the German Hifi Magazin Stereo for music and sound - so I guess my few critical comments are only my view....

Bert

also the review in the Hifi magazine is just the opinion of one person.

i find I disagree with some reviewers of some magazines and agree with other reviewers from other magazines.

in the end these are all just personal opinions and none can claim to hold the truth.

cheers

For me personally this has been the most anticipated release of the year. And I love it! There's absolutely no way I'm capable of looking at this with any degree of objectivity, but what I am hearing is the Pollini of old, just with a bit more pedal and less strength. The vision and passion remain.

Cheers,

EJ

A  live re-recording of the original 1974 album, plus a second CD of various live tracks from the Steeleye catalogue. Had me reaching for a pint of Old Speckled Hen in minutes, great nostalgia but a very good recording.

When this recording appeared in 1994, people could only compare it to Colin Davis' pioneering account from 1969 (with Jon Vickers), while everybody waited (in vain) for Placido Domingo and Jessye Norman to take to the studio. Against these odds, Dutoit didn't stand a chance with his good but less glamorous cast, headed by Gary Lakes who does everything well but lacks Domingo's beautiful voice or Vickers' power. But the years have been kind: Dutoit's conducting avoids the bombast of Davis I and is more exciting than Davis II (with Heppner) and he holds the vast work together better than everybody else. Voigt and Pollet are excellent as is the rest of cast with a few minor exceptions. The recorded sound is the best of all available recordings of Troyens.

Cheers,

EJ

This is a most charming set of these works IMO, even if I do not really appreciate the addition of the gamba and also find the BWV 565 arrangement a tad theoretical.

I think I like Uchida more with Mozart - but still quite pleasant...
