What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor, Op. 19 by Sergei Rachmaninov

I've been combing through the shelves today to find all my Rachmaninov recordings of the g-minor Cello Sonata.  It is my homework assignment and I always enjoy this period of pre-study while I gear up to learn a work.  For now, I'm only focusing on the Andante and this is such a fantastic privilege to know and experience this gem.  Frighteningly perfect in every way beyond my imagination and so thankful such a work exists as it gives such profound pleasure in getting to know it.  Usually at this stage I try to listen to as many recordings as possible and just remain open to ideas. Once I'm knee deep into the work itself, sleeves rolled up, this slowly tapers off to rarely listening to any recording since I'm solely focused on what I want to do with it and how I envision it.

Speaking of ECM New Series, can you believe that this label has not one recording of any music of Rachmaninov?  This is outrageous!  This is scandalous!  I mean really, who do they think they are?  Come to think of it, they have completely also dissed Chopin, Mendelssohn, Grieg, Prokofiev, and Ravel.  This has to be intentional but I better not say anything as I'm already in danger of speaking my mind too much lately?  Hmmph....

Hermann Baumann gave definitive performances of the Haydn concertos and the other works on this disc.

Cheers,

Mozart's quintets given superb performances by the Nash Ensemble. I vastly prefer them to the plush & comfy Grumiaux Ensemble.

Very good Steve. The original album has been (analogue) remastered by Albini and pressed on two 45rpm 180g discs. The third LP, at 33 1/3, has various ouutakes etc.

Vinyl is nice and quiet and flat and even on my humble system sounds pretty good - loud, and in your face, which is how I think it should sound. Not necessarily a "hi-fi experience" but this is rock & roll, after all

Raw and unrefind, Weller at his best. Prefered over his studio offerings.

...a different reading then I a prefer normally - Uchida, Pires or Kempff - but a great delight tohear such an energetic performance, while of course the pure sound quality can be improved..
