What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

The Early Beatles. Orange Capitol label. I bought this in June 1978 and played it hundreds of times as a teen. I have not heard it for 27 years. Sounds wonderful!

So what is it that makes Berlin so "****ing horrible"? Reed has spoken in recent years of trying to create the musical equivalent of the Great American Novel, and Berlin was his first – and last, for many years – attempt to achieve this. Where Transformer was a series of snapshots of New York freaks, telling strange enough tales to have a little rock and roll edge, but never delving so deep as to really distress, Berlin is a brutally unflinching portrait of a drug-addicted couple and their sustained, and tragically successful, efforts to destroy themselves and each other.

The packaging on this late 1990s CD is absolutely dreadful, but the SQ's fine and the music is friggin' great
