What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Composer John Bull fled England in 1613, fearing prosecution for "his incontinence, fornication, adultery and other grievous crimes". It clearly was not a case of bad compositions that forced his out.

Highly recommended.

It's been a while I listened to something jazzy-house.

Chicago's very own Anthony Nicholson.

Lovely Introduction and Allegro Appassionato Op.92.

Franz Schubert:  Janina Fialkowska (Piano)

Piano Sonata No. 13 in A major, D 664/Op. 120
Piano Sonata No. 18 in G major, D 894/Op. 78

Janina Fialkowska is among the top living pianists today.  I absolutely treasure this disc and in fact all her latest discs of Chopin, Liszt, and Mozart.  It seems, after battling and winning her battle with cancer she has, understandably, found a rather unmistakeable penchant for what I believe to be among the best recordings of the last decade.  Although, everyone is still clearly their own individual I find Fialkowska most closely resembles Maria-Joao Pires in maturity and musicality.  There is beauty sought from every note they touch.  Phrasing is very thoughtful and subtle.  Essentially they know how to have a conversation - one that is natural and very pleasing.

Sanity restored!  Unfortunately, I've been very cranky lately after a run of displeasing events.  I shouldn't be surprised though as it is typical to experience nine average or less than average discs for every one that may be exceptional.  Truly, I have found Janina Fialkowska's discs (this one and going back at least a decade) to be in the rare order of things and exceptional in every way.

No, I didn't. What is it like, Ewe?

Personally I prefer it as it is a more soulful album and IMHO the songs are stronger. It  is generally reckoned to be a classic.

Original Reaction mono 1968.

Listening to this on the back of the discussions yesterday about the SQ of Cream's LPs. Believe me there is nothing poor about the SQ of this album. I actually prefer the mono mix of this album also.

On CD... This is very good only wish i could find it on vinyl.

That's prompted me to listen to my original Reaction mono copy of this :-

It sounds pretty damn fine to me too, and it's in remarkably good nick after all the abuse it's probably suffered over its early years.

Wheels of Fire next...

SteveJ,

Thanks for your replies on the Cream LPs. I was listening today to Polydor vinyl 'The Greatest Hits of Eric Burdon and The Animals' (Polydor SE 4602) . Overall, a very engaging sound to this LP, but not without some SQ vagaries that I had heard on Polydor's Best of Cream, (i.e., intermittent passages of fuzzy-sounding bass, vocal break-ups, and less than studio quality recording). I don't think it's damaged vinyl because other tracks on my LP taken individually sounded just fine.

Maybe just enjoy them for their time, era, and energy?

There are four others in this series, all just as cheap. Less than £15 for five CDs.... I'm cracking G, cracking...
