What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Arve Henrikson, "Places of Worship" on vinyl.

Very many thanks to Adrian (Lontano) of this forum for recommending it to me, I'm enjoying it immensely.

Chopin's model for his polonaises was the traditional Polish dance, always in 3/4 time. For Blechacz, the dance is only the container, holding a core that contains some of Chopin's most extrovertly passionate, turmoiled, music. His way is closer to Argerich than Rubinstein.

With the neighbours away and insomnia biting hard, it's the perfect time for some early morning listening.

This Columbia Legacy vinyl reissue (from about six years ago IIRC) has unbelievably fat bass, which as far as I'm concerned is A Very Good Thing. "Shining Star" and "Sun Goddess" are quite shockingly funky.

What to couple with Elgar's unequaled cello concerto? Weilerstein opts for Elliott Carter's difficult cello concerto, while more recently Queyras went the other way and programmed Tchaikovsky's over-sugared Rococo-variations. Neither are ideal IMO.

Weilerstein's performance of the Elgar is brilliant. She is supported by Barenboim to take a lushly romantic approach. She is more lyrical than Du Pré but still with passion to spare.

Double vinyl (plus EP).

The last in a run of five - count 'em - game-changing masterpieces fro  the 1970s by possibly the best soul singer-composer of all time.

With today's weather this is strangely appropriate as I watch the clouds scudding over and the trees bending in the gusts...
