What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Franz Schubert:  Inon Barnatan (Piano)

Sonata for Piano in C minor, D 958

Sonata for Piano in A major, D 959
Impromptu in G flat D899 No. 3

I thoroughly enjoyed this disc.  Israeli born Inon Barnatan has already won me over with previous releases and this one continues to infect me.  The interesting thing is that just by default I would always side with a Schubert player who tends to the softer, less aggressive side.  In fact, this is true of all piano music I like and listen to.  What is confounding here is that Barnatan seems to be playing slightly on the aggressive side but the overall effect is a warm, rich, even poetic.  It is counterintuitive but somehow with a slight of hand he pulls you in.  You think one thing and the result is something else you didn't expect.  What is also remarkable is his exacting touch.  Exacting on one hand yet wonderfully dark with hues of colour and controlled on the other.  You will hear soft like rarely anywhere else and yet the loud sections are tasteful and not forced.  The Steinway piano is also a beautiful example of a rich tone - especially in the lower register.  This alone is worthy of my repeated listens for the joy it brings me.

Wet and very windy and dark by 17:30. A good excuse to stay in and listen to some music. Whilst I prefer GMT to UCT, why don't we shift to CET and be done with it?

An abstract variety of music.

Mozart's requiem (AAM/Hogwood), from ripped CD on the NS01 through the NDS:

Then...

Although I'm not a big fan of Jimi Hendrix, this one really cooks (on vinyl from the 13 album box set):

Followed by some Wes Montgomery and back to the NDS:

Don't think I'll be able to face 'Transformer' though.

True. And we have to be thankful for the English Channel. But it would mean lighter evenings.

Not a good decision on my part, Doug. I had a lot of work to do this weekend around the house (on top of yard work) which forced me to choose between Schiff or a play in the city. If he were performing some of his Beethoven sonatas or even just more of a mixed program I would have opted for the concert. The six Partitas felt too similar in structure and mood so instead I ended up watching a bad play which somehow ended up getting rave reviews.

After your recent post I am feeling particularly guilty for missing Jeremy Denk's Goldberg Variations.

Van Morrison "Keep It Simple"

Dylan is next, the playing order means nothing, they both have given me great

musical pleasure over the years.

My first recording with Roland Hanna on the piano who kind of got lost in the company of stars like Jim Hall, Chet Baker, Ron Carter and Paul Desmond. I had to rediscover him nine years later through his solo and piano trio recordings.

Original Fontana 1st press. A rare record that I picked up in the '90s in mint condition. superb SQ and good music to boot. I don't think it's been reissued on vinyl but should be available on CD and download.

P.S. Despite what Chris Dolan say's that's not me guiding the horse.

Steve both in excellent condition and only a £25 for the pair. They have been sitting behind the counter for the last month just haven't been able to get in to collect them.Dave the owner knows the sort of music I like and usually holds on to anything he thinks i'll want before eBaying or putting them in the racks.
