What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Just playing my original 1st press vinyl copy to decide whether to buy the new Steven Wilson remaster. Don't think so even though it's a good price on Amazon at £14.50.

My Steve Wilson remastered CD turned up in the post today (thought it wasn't released until the 31st?). Will post impressions when I've given it a listen.

Steve, I gave up on vinyl in favour of CD more than 20 years ago, largely out of years of frustration of variable quality of pressings and my seemingly endless and largely fruitless efforts to get my deck(s) to track accurately and consistently.  CD seemed to hold out the prospect of more reliability and ease of maintenance. I've since heard what a well set-up LP12 can do but I shudder to think what it would cost to replace my CD collection with vinyl so I'm going to make the best of what I have.

On vinyl:-

Flat slabs of 180gm vinyl, but a few crackles, so maybe another clean, as this was the first of my latest "go" with the RCM.

Seems a much better aural experience than the CD, 12 tracks over 4 sides does allow more headroom, but still not the greatest mix, much more listenable though.

A much better "connection" with the music than before, so I think this might get a few more plays than the CD version.

I might even do a 24/96 rip.

Davis' second set of Sibelius symphonies, and his first with the LSO, contains some good performances, but his slack account of Kullervo isn't one of them.

Cheers,
