What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Which one do you prefer Steve?

I'm currently listening to TCFTB (Blue Liberty).

Probably favour Split at the moment but only because I'm a little more familiar with a couple of the tracks. Will definitely be hunting down more of their albums.TCFTB is a second press still A1 but on the black Liberty. The sound quality on both albums is stunning.

Oh and thanks for the little nudge I needed to go and collect them.

I thought you'd prefer Split. TCFTB is still quite bluesy whereas Split has some great rock riffs. I can recommend all their '70s albums and they can be picked up for relatively little money.

Scratching the Surface. Original Liberty.

The music on this LP is very good but the production by Mike (The Wombles) Batt is appalling. Tony McPhee told me it was a big regret with this LP that the production was so bad.

Steve Split edged it this morning Loud. TCFTB gets the vote tonight low volume wifes asleep on sofa but still tapping her feet along to the music

I love Gerard Souzay's '61 set, but this '62 Fischer-Dieskau/Moore set is quite good. Sonically, Souzay's original Philips pressing is much better than this 80s reissue, but both the phrasing on vocal and the timing of piano is just excellent to create expressive but natural rendition of the tunes. HIs rendition of Der Leiermann is utterly believable.

I would suggest you also give Matthias Goerne a try, I quite like his recordings on Schubert..

Hi Tony.

The new AM album is nothing like their 1st.  It is a far more mature album,  it is a mixture of thumping bass notes, intricate vocal layering and fabulously acute wordsmithery. I think it shows the Monkeys at the peak of their powers. Could be the album of the decade! IMO

Graham.

The 1st album is good for dancing and shaking your booty.

The last one is good for sitting down and drinking a glass of wine or two.
