What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

The best analogue pressing of this is the Original Recording Group remaster on 180 g vinyl. See here:

This pressing is second best:

The original pressings are also fine. Avoid Back to Black and Simply Vinyl editions.

First spin, of DG's most hyped recording of the year. And... it doesn't disappoint! Even Mutter may not be able to turn the concerto into a masterpiece but hers may be the most persuasive case I've yet heard.

Metallica on vinyl.I haven't listened to this for years

Steve C and garmtz,

Thanks for the recommendations on the Nevermind vinyl. Surprising, but being in Seattle I've never come across used Nirvana LPs in s/h shops. I believe I know where to go and get the 180 g pressing new off the shelf (hope it's still there). I will post my thoughts on the vinyl sound versus CD once I get a copy. Cheers!

You are welcome! I think you will find that the standard LP already is better than the CD, given a good turntable/cartridge/phono stage of course.

...didn't hear the Hamelin ones, but this is definitely a recommendation...delicate...

Joe hope it's the ORG copy garmtz recommends.I'm not surprised there's no S/H copies in Seattle. By Nevermind from what I've read they were considered sellouts around the seattle scene.

First play of Rickie Lee Jones - Live in Philadelphia 2000

It's every bit as good as I thought it would be. If you like the RLJ - 'Naked Songs' CD you will love this.

Have you picked any of the other Denis? I have some shows that were recorded by her but are not up for sale on her site. Not boots I may add.

The latest in CPO's long running series on Julius Röntgen, a composer who could be as good and as variable as, say, Rubinstein. His music is usually interesting and very listenable and frequently inspired, and so it is for the cello concertos. As throughout this series, the performances and recording quality are excellent. An all too rare chance to hear Gregor Horsch, lead cellist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, as soloist on disc.

Cheers,

EJ

Johannes Brahms:  Sergey Khachatryan (Violin), Lusine Khachatryan (Piano)

Sonata for Violin and Piano no 1 in G major, Op. 78

Sonata for Violin and Piano no 2 in A major, Op. 100

Sonata for Violin and Piano no 3 in D minor, Op. 108

Wonderfully dark, inward looking playing by this brother and sister team.  This suits me perfectly this evening.

Hi Ewen,

This is the only show I've bought. I listened to the other shows & decided that, 'Philly', appealed to me the best. Are there other shows you'd recommend, CD or DVD?.

BTW, Rae Morris will release her debut album on Atlantic next year, after recording it in LA during the summer.
