What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

A great M&M, Kuma. Unfortunately, I have to do with a digital version which is not the best. I am sure the baritone sax sounds real voluptuous on vinyl.

Haim,

I have not heard the CD version but I know MONO pressing sounds really good from this era.

Bad Company. Run With The Pack. On vinyl from 1976.

Posted on: 30 October 2013 by Florestan

Johann Sebastian Bach:  Viktoria Mullova (Violin), Ottavio Dantone (Harpsichord/Director), Accademia Bizantina

Concerto for Violin no 2 in E major, BWV 1042

Concerto for Harpsichord in E major, BWV 1053, arr. for violin in D

Concerto for Violin no 1 in A minor, BWV 1041

Concerto for 2 Harpsichords in C minor, BWV 1060, arr. for violin and harpsichord

After months of putting off getting this disc (on account of the coy or even impish photo of Mullova) is seems it is better to don't look but only listen.  There is much to be pleased with in this way.

The Doors. In Concert. 2CD set from 1991.

Morrison's charisma and showmanship shines. Morrison does Morrison - high energy rendition of 'Gloria' . Great poetry renditions. I love the dialogue between Jim and lady in the audience about astrology. Don't understand why 'Dead Cats, Dead Rats' has no studio cut.

For some reason this always sounds better after a drink or two .

Pink Floyd. The Wall. 2CD remaster from Columbia 1997. Purportedly same remaster as 1992 Shine On set, FWIW.

A great album. I'm one of those strange types that actually think it's Bad Co.s best album.

Vinyl. Arrived today from Germany. LP1 so far is superb. The version of the Yardbirds 'Shapes of Things To Come' is particularly good. Two more LPs to enjoy tonight. Back to work now.

This was Jason Lytle’s space pop album in the only way he could make a space pop album. Make it a concept album about the modern man, break the album into two parts, and create some of his most singalong songs of his career.

Wonderfully dark, inward looking playing by this brother and sister team.  This suits me perfectly this evening.

This is a wonderfill recording.

Sergey Khacahtryan is IMHO the best living violinist.

What do you think about it to her old recording of the Bach VC?

Well, the cello concerto has the benefit of being one of the few of its kind... there is also the piano concerto, which is arguably even less accomplished than the violin concerto, but with all its quirkiness well worth learning. We desperately need an imaginative pianist to take on this concerto - Matthias Kirschnereit perhaps, or Piers Lane? For some reason, famous pianists like Moravec, Kvapil and Richter tried and couldn't make it work, the recent one by Piemontesi is surprisingly better but surely not the last word (his Schumann, on the same disc, is anything but special).

Cheers,

EJ

Franceso Piomentesi is a fine pianist.

Just no some solo piano works from him
