What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Siris’s Svale Band - Hard to place other than Jazz, but irrespective of any of your pref music this band is a bit special in all respects.
Siri Beathe Gellein has one of the most emotional voices I’ve heard anywhere.
The band is a far cry from melodic as in relaxing - & nothing is melodic as in harmony. Its unique in that it has two bass players that in bass player terms are very harmonic, the other two provide a selection of very tasty sax & drums.
"Svale" carries a double meaning in Norwegian: "swallow," as in the bird, and "cool," as in jazz.
If I were to pick one it would be “Blackbird”
The "Love For Sale" track is really a bit special, it just exudes the low life & hopelessness that says – well the title says it all – her unique voice paints a very atmospheric picture
"Love" is a real woofer workout – its got stuff that goes real deep & with tone & timbre that many speakers will not resolve.
The other tracks – all are worth a write up - are just unique
Its all close mic’d & front row sound stage stuff makes you sit up & listen & then luxuriate in her voice & the skills & sounds of the band.
Haven't heard mention of this one in a very long time, Mike. I've got a CD of Blackbird on the Sonor Records label. Discovered it at a Hi-Fi show at Heathrow in either '97 or '98. Quite a few of the manufactorers were using the CD for demo purposes as it is a very high quality production. I think I was one of many attendees who were sufficiently impressed to buy the CD at the show.

I hadn't heard it in a long time either MDS, it used to be a favourite for playing when the Mrs was out. I found it (& another SSB CD) when I was sorting thru the collection in an attempt to re-index them. I put them aside for listening during last evening.
WOW what a revelation, stuff not heard before etc, but why? I can only put it down to the first time I'd heard it on my current speakers - new in 2010, or the most likely reason was it was the 1st time with the XPS on the CDX2,
Bit of Lizard to start the evening's listening
Led Zeppelin III

So now I'm very interested to know what anyone's thought are regarding the older Philips Mullova Bach and compared to the latest round on Onyx which I have just been able to start collecting?
Today:
Johann Sebastian Bach: Viktoria Mullova (Violin), Ottavio Dantone (Harpsichord & Positive Organ), Vittorio Ghielmi (viola da gamba), Luca Pianca (lute)
Easily headed for the top shelf...
Cheers,
EJ

Doug, Mullova did three Bach discs in the early 90s - single discs with the partitas for solo violin and half of the sonatas for violin and piano (with Canino on a modern grand), and the Bach concertos. All are on metal strings as opposed to the gut she presently uses, but interpretatively the differences are much bigger. Her early Bach is austere and serious, whereas she has become much more playful. No doubt her recent performances are more accessible, but I have a secret preference for her early work which resonates on an emotional level that the recent recordings don't (for me). That said, I find her recent Bach concerto disc a return to form, as excellent as her earlier work (which was my first Bach disc).
Cheers,
EJ
