What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Isley Brothers: Brother, Brother, Brother

Finally getting around to listen to the Reiner/CSO's Iberia.

His direction is heavy handed like all the stuff I've heard out of him but certainly he gives plenty of distinctive style and mojo to the CSO. This was their golden era when the CSO had the *face*.

This original '58 mono pressing is unusually in a great shape and well cared for. There is even an AES setting for treble/bass/master volume/ and load configuration written by the previous owner.

The center hole is dead on. The surface noise is almost non existant. Just a faint white tape noise in the background. The natural sound of instruments pour out of the speakers. This is a sort of recording that makes the record playing worth while.

In contrast, the recent much hyped all analogue Decca pressing of Valentina Lisitsa's vinyl sounds pants compared to this over 50 year old vinyl record. (her performance was even worse ) :/

Mullova provides a straight, finely shaded performance of these works. Of the four concertos, only two overlap her earlier disc, and BWV 1060 is played in a different arrangement (known as a concerto for two harpsichords, Mullova first gave us a version for violin and oboe, and now for violin and harpsichord).

Cheers,

She always was an exceptional fiddler, and remains so.

We heard a new band called London Grammar last night on the Jools Holland Later! show on BBC2.  The BBC2 website is showing the video clips of the 2 songs that they played:

Strong, and

Stay Awake

Mesmerisingly, captivatingly good.

And the debut album "If You Wait" has been rated 5 stars by virtually everyone who has reviewed it on Amazon's UK web site.

I can understand why.

The Wigmore Hall Recital:  Maria-Joao Pires (Piano), Antonio Meneses (Cello)

Sonata for Arpeggioneand Piano in A minor, D 821 by Franz Schubert
3 Intermezzi for Piano, Op. 117 by Johannes Brahms
Song without words for Cello and Piano in D major, Op. 109 by Felix Mendelssohn
Sonata for Cello and Piano no 1 in E minor, Op. 38 by Johannes Brahms
Aria from Pastorale in F major, BWV 590 (Arrangement by Marie Roemaet-Rosanoff

For myself anyway there is a pretty self-explanetory reason this found its way to my CDS3.  Chamber music, solo piano, a piano, a cello, Meneses, Pires...

My only comment (about non-essentials) is this appears like a -"my freezers empty so let's put out another disc" type of effort.  The program booklet is very minimal (OK, in fairness it might still manage to offend the Twitts(erers) but it still seems aimed at them.  Not even a small biography of the players?  Surely they could have managed to spread 140 characters of tribute to both Pires and Meneses, a cellist I am not familiar with until now.

Brilliant album. Cannot understand why this this album /band was not not nominated for a Mercury Prize. Also thanks to Simon from Suffolk for the heads up on this some time ago.

'Red Garland Trio 1956' - superb nimble playing with the rain lashing outside.  Great drops falling from the window ledge in time it seems. Paul Chambers bowing solo's a nice counterpoint. G
