What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Kevin,

Where would you recommend I start with  e.s.t?

I don't have any of their albums and would like to know which one to start with.

Listened to a few samples and they all sound very good, their 'very best of' maybe?

Will have to be on vinyl though.

Many thanks,

Andy.

Hugely under-rated artist IMO. In spite of huge critical acclaim, and a stellar catalogue of some of the best melodies in music, he remains relatively commercially unsuccessful.

I just missed out on one for £31 on eBay Adrian .

Thanks for the heads up on "Places of Worship", it's becoming a contender for album of the year!

On CD - first time in ages that I have listened to it other than on an iPhone - it's rather good

I keep  returning to this album from Neil and tonight it sounds better than ever!

On original vinyl as they say.

The bad news for you is most of the EST catalogue is on CD. The good news is 4 of their albums are available on the snap, crackle and pop - Best of (very good), Live in Hamburg (Times top jazz album of the noughties), Leococyte - don't bother yet, 301, good but not great post demise release.

To get serious about the best jazz band of all time, you need

Good Morning Suzie Soho,

From Gagarins Point of View

A Strange Place for Snow

Seven Days of Falling

Tuesday Wonderland

Viaticum

and they all sound wonderful on CD. The best of pulls mainly from the albums I just recommended.

Hi Andy

"Retrospective" is a decent 2009 compilation, available on vinyl. The best two albums IMO are "Tuesday Wonderland" and "Leucocyte" - only the latter is available on LP as far as I know.

The posthumous "301", from last year, is also on the black stuff and also very very good.

A return to form? Liking this one a lot. Vedder still has one of the best voices in rock. Great musicianship from the rest of the band.

Why?

Just because it's great

This Steve Wilson re-mastered CD seems to have an analogue warmth about it.  Very nice , too.

have been very critical about the album so far, also in this forum. I think after a couple of runs in the car that's still not one of the best of this band. However with the less fantastic car audio system the overall experience is a bit better. So bottom line - a bit more positive , although I am still awaiting a new masterwork like: Scenes of a Memory...
