What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Last time I saw this lot was at the Reading festival in 94'. Since then they have released even greater albums but this one is still my favourite.

Perahia's Impromptus Op.90

Clear, pretty and mellifluous but on the whole, he's too reserved. No.4 is rhythmic but surprisingly lacking in his usual many shades of colours ending up monotone. I think I prefer Brendel's Vox recording or Richter's live set  even with several misplaying for this.

After not listening to this on vinyl for 27 years I had forgotten about the speed stability issue on side three. It's mentioned on some other fora, but I could not find anything definitive as to why defective pressings were issued. Is anyone here familiar with the issue? Maybe it was only on the US pressing.

Hi Kuma,

I've never thought of this set as mellifluous or pretty - just as straight a translation from what's on paper as possible. Personally I've found the results magnetic, with D899 nr 3 as the highlight.

Cheers,

Too straight for my taste, EJ. Interesting that you've picked up on the No.3. that's my least favourite tune out of the OP. 90. ( too sweet! ) NO.2 & 4 are where it's at. I dunno but he failed to put me in the Schubert mood.

'63 Vox recording by Brendel got me the *lights on* moment for me on Schubert Impromptus.

Now, this Mutter's Brahms Sonata indeed is lovely. She gives a wider range of voices and confidence altho, her earlier innocent style can be charming, too. Thanks for the reco!

And then on vinyl

I love this LP and it's a very graceful photo, but didn't you always wonder about those two balls hanging there?
