What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

About two weeks ago, I received the very rarely released Adolf Busch recording of Beethoven's Great fugue  or "Grosse Fuge" recorded in New York in 1941.

A terribly difficult piece to get to know ...

Originally designed for String Quartet, it was considered unplayable, and so Beethoven made a new and easier to play finale for the Quartet Opus 130 and the Great Fugue became more or less a freestanding orphan as opus 133 rather than the finale of Opus 130 ...

But there have been some successful recordings on Quartet and String Orcjeatra.

The Budapest Quartet made a tremendous recording in mono for American Columbia in about 1951, and Klemperer made a superb orchestral version with the strings of the Philharmonia in stereo in 1956.

This Busch Chamber Players performance sits between these two gigantic scaled [musically speaking] performances with some remarkable qualities. Clear, for sure, if unfortunately rather poorly recorded, but having the clarity of Klemperer's orchestral reading, with the volatility of the Budapest's one to a part rendition. Quite a coup to manage, and viscerally exciting, and there is great qualities of visceral excitement in the is music ...

All three should be heard by lovers of the music of the mature Beethoven.

ATB from George.

George,

An excellent example of what someone is listening to and why. I enjoy many of the suggestions made by contributors but it is really good to see the and why part explained in such detail with such knowledge and passion.

Mahler's 9th again. This time with Boulez/CSO. I think Boulez is more lyrical with whispering quality. Beautiful 4th. Pity that this 90s DG CD does not sound very good.

Hey Forum members,

Not everything I buy is a succes. Yesterday I bought two High-Res albums of Susan Wong. I'd probably better say Susan W(R)ong :-). Very light weighted voice and simple lyrics. Albums are relatively boring. The majority are covers. Not recommended unless one needs background music

Iver,

Thanks for the warning, but was this a totally blind purchase? Perhaps you were lured by the cover photos?

Double CD set of a legendary radio broadcast. Not overly fond of this era of the Dead but this this is a corking show:
