What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

My first listen on Viktoria Mullova's Brahms. Recommended by EJ. Indeed she's a lot different from Mutter. I think she could have had a better piano player.

She needed Klemperer. Not Abbado for the Violin Concerto! ( I have to say this was torturous to get through )

On the whole, I am not too nuts about her style of playing here.

On Grooveshark:-

A lot of their music is a bit samey but then I think that of "rap" type music generally.

Some of this album is fine even good. I do like their musicianship.

4 x LP boxset - Act 2013 release : )

Fab music from live recordings in 2006, and vinyl quality would be top notch too if it weren't for warp issues : (

The first set i had are unacceptably warped - both wave and dish buckle wot a mess!

the replacement set is 'okay' lots better but not perfect

Music really is fab though : )

One of my most treasured CDs: Mullova's first recording of three of the Bach sonatas. In comparison with her complete 2007 recording, the earlier performances are sparse and played with an almost mechanical detachment - and curiously, so much more touching and involving.

Kuma,

This is a curious coupling of music from originally three separate discs. The trio has an elderly Previn on the keys and cannot be considered a front runner. The Tokyo performance of the Brahms was never meant to be a standard choice, but a memento of a famous tour of the Berliners in Japan.

But the recording of the sonatas is different. I think the young Anderszewski and Mullova are of the same mind (this disc made his name, BTW). There's no accounting for taste, but there is no performance like it, and this was still Mullova the lovely ice queen.

Cheers,

EJ

Hi Haim,

So far only have and heard 'Grand Voyage' which i seem to get out and play every Autumn... something to do with the cover art maybe.?

But i like what i hear more with every play, and more Quadro Neuvo albums are on my wishlist.

Just wish i could find Antakya on vinyl : )
