What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Ryan Adams "Easy Tiger"

A mercurial artist, this is one of his "on" albums. Saw

him live in Oct 2001, an amazing 2.5 hour set. Thanks to

Graeme H for reminding of Ryan this morning.

What a fantastic LP sleeve - brilliant image is the music as good Steve?

The music is very good. Jazz rock would probably describe it. Best track is 'Listen Here' which has 4 drummers playing.

The cover just reminded me of a record I have with a similar sleeve photo. It's  The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation. This is British Blues. Liberty 1969

Back to Brian Auger, this CD is very good and has most of the best tracks of the LPs above. I notice that it has gone up a lot since I bought it.

On CD:-

Harry Connick Jr. - To See You

Continuing the Brian Auger theme. This 1972 LP has a more soulful jazz funk flavour.

I know that album Haim, love it! Oddly enough, when I bought it, back in 1991, I was actually living on Rossiter Road, London SW12.

Spooky eh?

On CD. Another freebie I picked up a few months ago that I've only just got round to listening to. An interesting mixture of jazz, post-rock, electronica, chamber music and jazz. (I think!).

I've only the LSO Live box set of Sibelius symphonies on CD, so I've no means of comparison.

The Gesualdo, on the other hand, has been a discovery for me also in the last year or so. I'm in equal parts baffled and delighted with his madrigals and religious music. I have the disc above on CD - it's beautiful (BTW - so are the other discs issued on PH's own Phi label).

If you don't already have them, the Venexia performances of the 4th, 5th and 6th books of his madrigals on Glossa are superb (not sure if they have recorded books 1 to 3). The Naxos recordings of all 6 books of the madrigals by Delitiae Musicae are quite good also.

Happy Listening,

Vlad

It's taking some time to forget all the brouhaha around this performance and get to its core, but it's growing on me.

Cheers,
